Colleges and Universities throughout the 12th Congressional District have provided the following list of summer programs for young people. My office compiled this directory as a resource for parents, guardians, teachers and counselors to find positive activities for young people during the summer. The information listed in this guide was provided by the colleges and universities at my request and may not include all summer programs.

- Forensics Kid’s Camp July 20-24
Students participate in exercise that include techniques from the forensic laboratory and crime scene processing such as developing and lifting fingerprints, analyzing fibers and documenting evidence. - Police Academy Summer Camp July 13-17
Students will enroll in a CPCC curriculum course, Law Enforcement Operations. Upon successful completion, students receive a letter grade on their college transcripts. This program targets high school juniors and seniors. For more information, call 704-330-4165. There is a $126 registration fee.

- Duke Action Science Camp for Young Women June 14-June 26
A summer camp designed for young women currently in grades 5-7 that promotes scientific discovery through laboratory and field experiences in a forest environment Participants examine ecological and biological principles through explorations of terrestrial and aquatic life; chemical and physical properties of the environment; and the impact of human activities on ecosystems.

A writing camp geared toward students currently in grades 6-11 that offers stimulating and lively classes in creative and expository writing. Participants develop and refine their creative and analytical processes of writing through diverse course offerings, such as short story, poetry, journalism, playwriting, and mystery writing. The academic day also includes small and large group learning activities, readers’ forum, and designated time for free-writing.

- Duke Drama Workshop July 12-24
A drama workshop designed for students currently in grades 9-11 that offers an intense drama experience, which culminates with a final performance. Participants attend daily acting classes to learn the creative and technical processes of acting and rehearsal periods of selected scenes from plays. The workshop provides a supportive environment for students who are committed to refining their skills and building a community of actors.

- Duke Creative Writers’ Workshop June 28- July 10
A creative writing workshop geared toward students currently in grades 10 and 11 for advanced writers, who are committed to refining their skills and building a community of writers. Instructors and peers work collaboratively to assist participants in reaching their self-defined workshop goals. The interactive format allows participants to share work in small groups and receive constructive written and verbal feedback in a supportive environment.

- Duke Expressions! Performing Arts Camp June 14-26
An art camp designed for students currently in grades 5-8 that offers an exploration of the fine arts through intense, active learning. Curriculum offerings include drama, visual art, dance, and musical theatre. Participants and staff work together to develop a community of working artists where students are encouraged and supported to stretch their creativity and expand their talents.

- Duke Constructing Your College Experience July 12-27
A summer youth program for students currently in grades 10 and 11 that is designed to empower college-bound students in their exploration of college options and the navigation of the college application process. Participants learn to evaluate colleges relative to their own interest and needs, understand the multi-dimensional application process, and discover the challenges and opportunities of university life.

This program is an interactive Saturday camp to improve writing skills for ages 8-11. The program will include grammar games and activities, essay writing techniques, visits from writing professionals (poet, journalist, short story writer, commercial writer).

Energy Engineer Starters Program Junior (EESP) June 15-26
This summer outreach program is geared toward students ages 12-17 to familiarize students with building design concepts relating energy efficiency. These activities include conduction experiments that illustrated basic energy concepts. They are introduced to non renewable energy and renewable energy concepts. The goal of EESP is to promote awareness of ways energy is consumed and how it can be conserved and it is held in conjunction with the ESP program.

NOAA ISET (Middles School Weather and Climate Camp) July 20-24 Student in grades 6-8 will perform a variety of hands-on experiments and computer simulations to learn about weather and climate forecasting. They will research a weather phenomenon of their choice and make a presentation on it. Each participant will take home a tape of their presentation a television weather forecast. The program will run each day from 8 AM – 5 PM.

Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP) June 29-July 24 RAP is a four-week residential program for high school juniors and seniors, sponsored by the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (SAES) at North Carolina A&T State University. Its main objective is to simulate interest in careers in the food, agricultural, environmental, family and consumer sciences. Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders (IFAL) June 14-19 Sponsored by the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, this one-week residential program is designed for high school juniors and seniors to develop their potential to become future leaders in environmental, agriculture, and natural resources fields. Students are exposed to career opportunities in agriculture, environmental, and food science. Students will receive an orientation to academic programs in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, in conjunction with tours of research laboratories and agribusinesses. Students will also gain invaluable experience in leadership development by participating in leadership training seminars, touring the NC General Assembly, meeting government officials, and visiting the NC Farm Bureau Offices. Summer High School Transportation Institute TBA Sponsored by the Transportation Institute of the School of Business and Economics, this program provides high school students with basic information on careers and academic opportunities available in transportation. This program seeks to broaden the pool of potential applicants, especially women available for the transportation work force and transportation education at the university level. The Institute is open to rising juniors and seniors with GPA of 2.5 or better. The five and one-half week program includes an introduction to transportation, career exploration, field trips, personal development sessions, SAT preparation and a (3) credit hour English course and weekly stipend. Higher Learning Institute TBA
Sponsored by the Office of Summer Sessions, the Higher Learning Institute is a Residential and a Non-Residential Program. The program provides an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher to enroll in freshman level courses at North Carolina A&T State University for which there is no course prerequisite. The course credits earned will be “banked” and available for advanced placement in the student’s freshman year of college. This program introduces the students to college life. They will attend the second summer session with the regular college student populations. Each student is required to take a minimum of two (2) classes (to earn 6 or 7 credit hours). During the 5-week experience, each student will earn certification in specific workshops, explore diverse career options, visit and learn about historical sites in North Carolina as well as participate in extra curricular activities. The workshops will introduce, teach and refine, social, personal and professional etiquette. Tuition, required fees and room and board are paid by the student. Upward Bound Program June 21-July 29 This year-round academic program is designed to generate in participants the skills and motivation necessary to complete a secondary education and enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education. The Program at North Carolina A&T State University serves high school students from Guilford County. Upward Bound services are provided in three components (1) a six-week residential program, (2) a nine-month academic year program and (3) a bridge program for Upward Bound graduates. Services include instruction, tutoring, career exploration, counseling, and academic advisement as well as recreational, social and cultural activities. In order to be considered for enrollment in Upward Bound, potential participants must complete an application, reside in the target area, be enrolled or plan to enroll in a college prep curriculum in school, and show a need for program services. Students Hot On the Sciences (SHOTS) TBA SHOTS is a six week program for high school juniors and seniors from Guilford County schools interested in science careers and biotechnology. Science and Technology Enrichment Program (STEP) June 15-July 24 STEP is a six-week program for rising high school juniors, seniors and incoming college freshmen interested in science and mathematics. This program is offered in order to prepare the next generation of scientist and scholars through an intensive "mind-on" and "hands-on" experience. Subjects include analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology and mathematics. The STEP participants also complete on-line research on a scientific topic of their interest, prepare a power-point presentation, and present their research to the STEP group as well as to their parents at the end of the program. At the end of each year, two top students in the program will be designated as "Science Scholars" and given an opportunity to complete state-of-the-art scientific research with a faculty mentor over the summer and during the year. The program runs from 9AM to 4 PM. Lunch will be provided at the college cafeteria. A limited stipend will also be provided One hundred percent attendence is required. School of Drama: The session is for the serious student who wishes to explore the acting profession. Students are introduced to the craft and technique of professional training for theatre, film and television. Students must be at least 15 years of age and have completed 9th grade. Drama teachers are encouraged to participate. The program is also open to college students.

School of Filmmaking: The session is for students who are rising 10th, 11th, or 12th graders. The program is for either the beginning or intermediate student who is looking for a strong foundation for further training in the language of film and television. It provides an intensive experience in the demands of creative moviemaking.

School of Music: Choose your own dynamic program for individual instruction with a world-class faculty and performance opportunities to accelerate the development of your talent. Programs include:

Musica Piccola – A high energy program for all orchestral and band instruments. Emphasis on private study and technique development, chamber music, and large ensemble experience.

Chamber Music Institute – A higher-level program for strings and piano, focusing on private study and intense chamber music study.

Piano Workshop – A program for private study and development of technique.
Guitar Workshop – A program dedicated to private study, technique development and guitar ensemble performance.

Vocal Workshop – A session that includes group study, movement and dance, and acting in both classical music and musical theatre.

Organ Works – A program of daily private lessons and master classes (organs by Fisk, Holtkamp, Skinner and Walker) along with investigation of organ history and literature, improvisation, service playing, and an introduction to the harpsichord, culminating with and “organ crawl.”

Visual Arts: The program trains promising students to use the skills and tools of visual communication through a variety of methods. Studio classes explore the mechanical, philosophical, and intellectual aspects of the art experience. Instruction and practice provided in drawing, two- and three-dimensional design and sculpture. Students must be at least 14 years of age. The program is also open to the beginning college student.

Now in its 47th year, the All Sports Camp at Wake Forest will once again be available to the youth of Winston-Salem. Boys and girls ages 6-12 are invited to participate. Campers will participate in over 20 different sports and activities. Emphasis will be on fun, participation, friendships through sport, fitness, and sportsmanship.

Lego Camp July 20- August 7
Lego Camp, The Inventive Builder, is a summer camp for kids to build, create, and discover using legos. Older builders are challenged with Lego Mindstorms where they build and program their own robots. Daily lessons incorporate architecture, engineering, and design.

This is a college preparatory program geared towards grades 9-12. The goal of the program is to motivate the individual to continue to pursue a postsecondary education.
